The New York Times reported on a new noise-reduction system for recording records and tapes, developed by engineers R. and D. W. Dolby as a modified version of a process already used in recording studios. The system enabled higher-quality home recording on blank cassettes. Elektra Records subsidiary Checkmate Records became the first record label to use the new Dolby process on its recordings.
