Elton John officially received an RIAA gold record for "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me", which had previously spent two weeks at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, behind John Denver's "Annie's Song".
Elton John performed the first of three nights at The Troubadour in Los Angeles. The concerts were intended to raise $150,000 for the Jules Stein Eye Institute at UCLA.
Elton John’s ninth studio album “Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy” returned to No. 1 on the US Billboard 200 after a six-week break. That same year, it also topped the charts in Australia, Canada and New Zealand.
