University of Tennessee audio laboratory director Dr. David M. Lipscomb announced that a guinea pig exposed to a total of 88 hours of rock music at a volume of 120 decibels over three months had suffered acute damage to its inner ear. The music had been recorded at a Knoxville discotheque. Steve Paul, owner of New York's The Scene club, responded to the report with an ironic remark about the guinea pigs' comfort.
