Description

RCA Victor announced that sales of Elvis Presley's recordings had exceeded 400 million units. This milestone was a significant moment in the final year of Elvis's life and confirmed his position at the time as the most commercially successful artist in the history of the recording industry. In later years, Graceland and RCA parent company Sony Music estimated that Elvis had sold more than one billion recordings worldwide.

    Elvis Presley performed at the Municipal Auditorium in Mobile, Alabama, before an audience of 10,720. He gave an afternoon concert at 2:30 p.m. as well as an evening performance at 8:30 p.m. During the afternoon concert, he wore a blue Bicentennial costume and performed, among others, "America", "Johnny B. Goode", "Hurt", "Mystery Train/Tiger Man", and "Can't Help Falling in Love". A recording of the concert exists under the title "Stuck In Mobile". For the evening performance, he wore a white Bicentennial costume.

    Elvis Presley leased a private aircraft for one year. He paid a $26,000 deposit and a monthly rental fee of $13,000.

    He canceled the rental of a Fairchild aircraft and instead purchased a Jet Commander for $508,000. He later flew from Memphis to Las Vegas, but due to breathing difficulties, the aircraft had to make an unplanned landing in Dallas. After resting for several hours at a motel, he continued his journey.

    Elvis Presley continued in Las Vegas with the routine he had begun in North Carolina, with Charlie Hodge selecting audience requests from a bucket and Elvis attempting to fulfill them. During the evening show, Elvis at one point lay down on the stage while singing. The program included “See See Rider”, “I Got a Woman/Amen”, “Blue Suede Shoes”, “If You Love Me”, “It’s Now or Never”, “My Boy”, “Love Me”, “Loving You”, “Suspicious Minds”, “Johnny B. Goode”, “Hail Hail Rock’n’Roll”, “T-R-O-U-B-L-E”, “Why Me Lord”, “How Great Thou Art”, “Let Me Be There”, “Crying in the Chapel” and “Can’t Help Falling in Love”. The midnight show included “Young and Beautiful”, “Are You Lonesome Tonight?”, “Softly, as I Leave You”, “Polk Salad Annie”, “Love Me Tender”, “All Shook Up”, “Hound Dog” and “My Boy”.

    Elvis initially wanted to cancel both evening concerts in Las Vegas because he was not feeling well, but Colonel Parker insisted that he perform. Elvis ultimately performed both the evening and midnight shows at the Hilton Hotel. The evening program included, among others, “Hound Dog”, “It's Now Or Never”, “And I Love You So”, “Burning Love” and “Can't Help Falling In Love”; during the midnight performance, James Burton's birthday was celebrated. After the engagement ended, the following 36 concerts were canceled.

    Elvis cancelled the remainder of the 36-show Las Vegas engagement and left the Hilton at 6:00 a.m. accompanied by Dr. Nick. They flew to Memphis, where Elvis was admitted to Baptist Memorial Hospital due to exhaustion.
