Description

Pete Seeger sang “We Shall Overcome” at the Highlander Folk School in Tennessee during celebrations of its 25th anniversary. Martin Luther King Jr. was also present and delivered the closing speech. The song later became closely associated with the civil rights movement, in which King and Seeger fought for equality.

    Pete Seeger testified before the House Un-American Activities Committee, where he was asked whether he had performed for communists. Seeger stated that he had sung for Americans of all political beliefs and that he was proud never to have refused to sing to any audience regardless of its religion, skin color or circumstances in life.
