Description

The Who had their equipment van stolen outside Battersea Dogs' Home in England while they were inside getting a guard dog. One source valued the equipment at $10,000, while another put it at more than £5,000. The van was later recovered. Some sources describe the incident as the theft of the van and equipment, while others emphasize the theft of equipment from the van.

    The Who began two days of recording at IBC Studios and Pye No. 2 Studio in London. During these sessions, the group recorded “Barbara Ann” by The Regents, “Man with Money” by The Everly Brothers, “Heatwave” by Martha and the Vandellas and the theme tune from the then-popular television series Batman. The recordings were intended for a new album with the working title “Jigsaw Puzzle”. The producer was Kit Lambert and the sound engineer was Paul Clay.

    Their single “I'm A Boy” entered the British chart and reached No. 2, giving the group its second No. 2 single. The song was originally intended to be part of the rock opera “Quads,” set in a future where parents could choose the sex of their children.

    The Who began a week-long engagement at The Palais in Ilford, Essex, England. Later that day, they recorded performances of "I'm A Boy" and "Heatwave" for the British television program "Ready, Steady, GO!"

    The Who spent two days at Talentmasters Studio in New York. Al Kooper joined the group on organ while they recorded two versions of “Mary Anne With The Shaky Hand.” One was released in the U.S. as the B-side of “I Can See For Miles,” while the other remained in the archives until the expanded version of “The Who Sell Out” was released in 1995. They also recorded a studio version of “Summertime Blues,” an organ overdub for “Relax,” and new vocals for “I Can See For Miles.”
