Sergio Mendes, pianist, songwriter and arranger and one of the early Brazilian pioneers of modern crossover, died in Los Angeles at the age of 83. His innovative style and promotion of samba brought him worldwide fame. His family did not disclose the cause of death, although the source reported that Mendes had recently suffered from long-term effects of COVID.
