Description

The Victor Talking Machine Company was founded on October 3, 1901. It was formed by combining the interests of Eldridge R. Johnson and companies associated with Emile Berliner; it was legally incorporated on October 3, 1901, and organized two days later. It later became a major manufacturer of phonographs and gramophone records. In 1929, it was acquired by the Radio Corporation of America, creating the RCA Victor brand, which became a major manufacturer of phonographs and gramophone records for several decades.

    The Victor Talking Machine Company of Camden, New Jersey, began manufacturing the Victrola, the first practical home phonograph with an “internal horn”. The hand-operated machine with a cabinet containing a built-in horn sold for $200, while records were purchased separately, usually for $1 to $7. Famous conductor John Philip Sousa warned about “canned music” and predicted that recordings would replace generations of amateur musicians.
