The Shangri-Las' single “Leader of the Pack” was released. Of their six U.S. Top 40 hits, it became the only one to reach number one. In the UK it peaked at number 11.

    “The Leader of the Pack” by The Shangri-Las entered the Billboard Hot 100 and reached number one seven weeks later. It became the only one of their six U.S. Top 40 hits to top the chart. In the UK it reached number 11, despite being rejected for broadcast by the BBC because of its story about a motorcycle accident and death. The Shangri-Las' single “Remember (Walking in the Sand)” reached number six on the U.S. chart.
