At a time when broadband internet access was still rare, U2 streamed a concert from their Elevation Tour in South Bend, Indiana, free of charge on U2.com.
U2 played the first of two sold-out concerts at Wembley Stadium in London. During the encore, they performed a medley of several songs and six songs in full.
During U2’s PopMart Tour in Leeds, Bono responded to George Harrison’s comment that Bono and his band were “so egotistical” by raising his middle finger and saying, “This is for you, George!”
The Clarence Hotel in Dublin, owned by members of U2, was damaged by a fire that took more than three hours to bring under control. The nightclub The Kitchen, located in the same building, was also affected and had to be evacuated.
They broke the attendance record at Wembley Stadium when 88,000 people attended their concert. The previous record was held by Rod Stewart, whose 1995 concert drew 83,000 people.
During their sold-out Zoo TV Tour, U2 performed two concerts at Yankee Stadium in New York on August 29 and 30. They became only the second act to perform at the stadium, following Billy Joel.
U2 achieved their first No. 1 on the UK singles chart with their twelfth single, “Desire.” The song came from the album Rattle and Hum, also reached No. 1 in Australia and five other countries, and peaked at No. 3 in the US.
U2 released the album Rattle and Hum, which combines new studio tracks, live recordings and covers. It includes recordings from Sun Studios in Memphis and collaborations with Bob Dylan, B. B. King and the gospel choir Harlem's New Voices of Freedom.
