Led by Betty Friedan, the new feminist movement in the US organized a nationwide
Women's Strike for Equality.
The day was proclaimed by presidential proclamation in the United States as
Women's Equality Day to commemorate the 19th Amendment to the Constitution of
1920, which granted American women the right to vote on the same basis as men.
Sonny Bono announced his candidacy for mayor of Palm Springs, California. He said he was frustrated by bureaucracy surrounding the renovation of his Italian restaurant. He won the
1988 election and served as mayor until
1992. In
1996, he subsequently won a seat in Congress.
