Bernie Taupin's lyrics were written in two and a half weeks, and Elton John composed most of the music in three days in Kingston, Jamaica. The album sold more than 30 million copies worldwide, sold eight million copies in the United States, and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2003.

    AC/DC played their first concert with Bon Scott as lead singer. The concert took place at Masonic Hall in Rockdale, Australia.

    Elvis Presley performed two concerts at the Expo Convention Center in Indianapolis, Indiana. The first began at 2:30 p.m. and the second at 8:30 p.m.; both were attended by 14,000 people. For the first performance he wore the Mad Tiger suit, and for the second the Peacock suit.

    Mike Oldfield's album Tubular Bells reached No. 1 on the UK album chart for the first time, 15 months after its release. Interest surged after the album was used in the film The Exorcist. Tubular Bells was the first album released by Virgin Records and sold more than 10 million copies worldwide. After spending three weeks at No. 1 with Hergest Ridge, Mike Oldfield remained at the top with Tubular Bells.

    Olivia Newton-John achieved the first No. 1 hit of her career on the Billboard Hot 100 with “I Honestly Love You.” The song appeared on the album If You Love Me, Let Me Know, and its success helped the album reach No. 1 on the Billboard Top LPs & Tape a week later. The song began a two-week run at the top and was her first of five US No. 1 hits.

    Randy Newman performed at Atlanta Symphony Hall with an 87-piece orchestra conducted by his uncle Emil Newman.

    The Beach Boys reached No. 1 on the US Billboard album chart for the second time in their career with Endless Summer. The compilation of original recordings from the 1960s spent 155 weeks on the chart and received triple-platinum certification for sales of more than three million copies.

    Comedian, singer, and songwriter Jud Strunk died at the age of 45 in a small-plane crash in Maine after suffering a heart attack while piloting the aircraft. He became famous for appearing on Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In and for the hit “Daisy A Day,” which reached No. 14 in 1973.
