Captain & Tennille had several hits on the US chart, including “Love Will Keep Us Together”, “Do That to Me One More Time” and “Muskrat Love”. Dragon also worked with The Beach Boys. He died on January 2, 2019, from kidney failure.
  13. Chip Douglas
    American multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and producer Douglas Hatlelid, known as Chip Douglas, was born in San Francisco. He became known as a member of The Turtles and as a producer of The Monkees, for whom he produced hits including “Daydream Believer” and “Pleasant Valley Sunday”. The Turtles had the US No. 1 hit “Happy Together” in 1967.

    American musician John Voorhis “Tim” Bogert III was born in New York City, New York. He became known as the bassist and singer of Vanilla Fudge and Cactus and as a member of the trio Beck, Bogert & Appice. He died on January 13, 2021, from cancer.

    Percussionist David Leon “Billy” Knight, brother of Gladys Knight, was born. He played, among other recordings, on “Midnight Train To Georgia” and on more than twenty other UK Top 40 hits. He died on December 6, 2002.

    Alex Lifeson, born Aleksandar Zivojinovic (Zhivojinovic), was born in Fernie, British Columbia, Canada, to parents of Serbian origin. He grew up in Toronto, Ontario. He became known as the co-founding guitarist of the progressive rock band Rush, which had, among others, the British hit “Spirit of Radio” and the US hit “New World Man”. In 1996, he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada.

Valley Low” won a Grammy in 1999, and in 2016 she received the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award for volunteer service.

    Elvis Presley hosted The Beatles at his rented home on Perugia Way in Bel Air, California, during a break in their North American tour. The four-hour meeting included discussions about music and an unrehearsed jam session. The Beatles were initially nervous, but Presley broke the tension. While the musicians were getting acquainted, their managers Colonel Tom Parker and Brian Epstein played pool in the next room. John Lennon later said that without Elvis, The Beatles would have meant nothing.

    On the final day of their five-day break during their North American tour, The Beatles visited a recording session by The Byrds and later, at around 10:00 p.m., visited Elvis Presley at his home on Perugia Way in Bel Air, Los Angeles. The meeting was initially somewhat stiff, but Elvis broke the tension by suggesting that they play together, followed by a jam session on Chuck Berry songs. Colonel Tom Parker and Brian Epstein played pool in the meantime. It was The Beatles' only personal meeting with Elvis Presley.

    The song “Sunny”, written by Bobby Hebb, reached No. 1 on the Cash Box chart and No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became the best-selling single in the USA. Its success led Hebb to tour the United States and Canada with The Beatles.

    “Cherish” by The Association entered the Billboard Hot 100 and reached No. 1 a month later. Although the song was actually longer, the record label listed its length as three minutes so that radio programmers would not reject it as too long. The recording later received a gold record for sales of more than one million copies and, according to BMI, was the 22nd most-played song of the 20th century.

    “God Only Knows” by The Beach Boys reached No. 2 on the UK singles chart. The song was among the first commercial recordings to feature the word “God” in the title and was groundbreaking in many ways. Capitol Records feared a reaction from US radio programmers, so in the USA it placed the song on the B-side of the single “Wouldn't It Be Nice”, while in the UK it was accepted as the A-side. Brian Wilson used a range of unusual instruments during the recording, including French horns.
  42. Brian Epstein
    British music manager Brian Epstein, best known as the manager of The Beatles, was found dead in his locked bedroom at his home in London’s Belgravia at the age of 32, just a few weeks before his 33rd birthday. The coroner determined that the cause of death was an overdose of the sleeping medication Carbitrol and ruled his death accidental. The Beatles were then in Bangor, North Wales, attending a conference with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Epstein also managed Gerry & The Pacemakers, Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas, Cilla Black and The Remo Four. The first contract between The Beatles and Epstein was auctioned for £240,000 in 2008.

    British-American musician, bassist and songwriter Tony Kanal was born in London to Indian parents. He became known as a member of No Doubt, who had the 1997 UK No. 1 single “Don't Speak”, while the album “Tragic Kingdom” sold more than 16 million copies worldwide. He dated the band's singer Gwen Stefani for approximately seven years; their breakup inspired the song “Don't Speak”, and they subsequently remained friends and bandmates.

Approximately 11,000 people attended the concert, and the program included “See See Rider”, “Love Me”, “All Shook Up”, “Teddy Bear/Don't Be Cruel”, “Fever”, “America”, “Polk Salad Annie”, “Hurt” and “Burning Love”, among others.

    Thirty-year-old Jimmy Buffett married his second wife, twenty-six-year-old Jane Slagsvol from Columbia, South Carolina. Slagsvol helped write Buffett's songs “Something So Feminine About A Mandolin” and “Kick It In Second Wind”. They later separated for nine years but subsequently reunited.

    Styx released the album “The Grand Illusion”, which became their breakthrough album and included the song “Come Sail Away”.

    The Floaters reached No. 1 on the UK singles chart with “Float On”. In the USA, the song reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. For the Detroit soul-funk group, it was their only UK hit, making them a one-hit wonder.

    George Strait made his film debut in “The Soldier”, where he sang his song “Fool Hearted Memory” in a honky-tonk during the outbreak of a fight. The song later became the first of his 44 country No. 1 hits.

    Robert Plant's solo album “Pictures at Eleven” was certified gold for sales of 500,000 copies. It was his first recording following the breakup of Led Zeppelin after the death of drummer John Bonham.

    American R&B singer and songwriter Mario Dewar Barrett was born in Baltimore, Maryland. In 2004, he had the US No. 1 hit “Let Me Love You”, which reached No. 2 in the UK in 2005.
  78. Tina Turner
    Tina Turner received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 1750 N. Vine Street near Capitol Records. She began her career in 1957 in Ike Turner's band, the Kings of Rhythm, under the name Little Ann. Between 1983 and 1993, she had thirteen songs on the Billboard Hot 100 as a solo artist, including the hit “What's Love Got To Do With It”, which reached No. 1 in 1984. She sold more than 100 million records worldwide.

    The jury failed to reach a verdict and the judge declared a mistrial in the case of Dead Kennedys frontman Jello Biafra, who was accused of distributing harmful material to minors because of H. R. Giger's illustration “Work 219: Landscape XX”, known as “Penis Landscape”, which was included as a poster with the 1985 album “Frankenchrist”. It was the first case in which a musician was prosecuted over an album cover, and the costly trial contributed to the subsequent breakup of Dead Kennedys.

    A Los Angeles radio station bypassed Epic Records' strict security measures concerning master tapes and broadcast a pirated sample of Michael Jackson's song “Bad” four days before its official release. The leak did not slow the album's expected success, as pre-orders had already exceeded 2.2 million copies.

    Billboard introduced the New Age Albums chart. The first album to reach No. 1 was pianist David Lanz's “Cristofori's Dream”.

    George Michael reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Monkey”. It was his fourth consecutive single from the album “Faith” to reach the top of the US chart, and his fourth US No. 1 in 1988. It was his eighth US No. 1 single of the 1980s, surpassed only by Michael Jackson.

    Kylie Minogue began a four-week run at No. 1 on the UK album chart with her debut studio album “Kylie”. At the age of 20, she became the youngest female artist to reach the top of the UK album chart. The record stood until 2003, when eighteen-year-old Avril Lavigne reached the top with “Let Go”.

    Tracy Chapman's debut album reached No. 1 on the US Billboard 200 for one week. The song “Fast Car” from the album reached No. 6 on the US chart. At the following Grammy Awards, Chapman won awards for Best Contemporary Folk Album and Best New Artist, while “Fast Car” won Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

    The three-day BCM Summer Dance Festival began at the Tempodrom in Berlin. The festival featured a number of American artists, including emerging hip-hop groups Stetsasonic, EPMD and UTFO, the Village People, and R&B singer Bobby Womack.

    Izzy Stradlin of Guns N' Roses was arrested at Phoenix airport after urinating on the floor of an airplane, reportedly angered by having to wait to use the toilet. His publicist said it was his “way of expressing himself”.
  87. Garth Brooks
    Garth Brooks scored his first US country No. 1 single with “Friends in Low Places”.
  88. Stevie Ray Vaughan
    Stevie Ray Vaughan, aged 35, died in a helicopter crash near East Troy, Wisconsin, after a concert at Alpine Valley Music Theatre. The helicopter crashed into an artificial ski slope while flying in dense fog. During the evening, Vaughan performed with Robert Cray and his Memphis Horns, Buddy Guy, Eric Clapton and his older brother Jimmie Vaughan. Three members of Eric Clapton's entourage also died in the crash; everyone on board was killed. In 2003, Rolling Stone ranked Vaughan No. 7 on its list of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time.

    Pearl Jam released their debut album “Ten” through Epic Records. The album became a cornerstone of grunge and contained the hits “Alive”, “Even Flow” and “Jeremy”. In the USA, it received a 13-times platinum RIAA certification, corresponding to 13 million copies sold, while more than 15 million copies were sold worldwide. Initially, the album was not a major success, but with the rise of grunge it reached No. 2 on the US Billboard 200 the following year.
  90. John Lennon; The Beatles
    The handwritten lyrics to The Beatles' song “A Day in the Life” from the album “Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band”, written by John Lennon, were sold at auction at Sotheby's in London for $100,000. The double-sided manuscript contained spelling mistakes and crossed-out words. It was offered at auction again in 2006, and in 2010 an anonymous American buyer acquired it for $1.2 million.

    German singer and songwriter Kim Petras was born. Her collaboration with Sam Smith on the 2022 single “Unholy” reached No. 1 on both the UK singles chart and the Billboard Hot 100.

    The television drama series “The Heights”, about a group of young people from a working-class background trying to form a rock band, premiered on FOX. The short-lived series gave rise to the song “How Do You Talk To An Angel”, which reached No. 1 on the chart.

    This year's three-day Reading Festival in the UK began with headliners New Order, The The, The Lemonheads, Rage Against The Machine and Dinosaur Jr. On the Melody Maker stage, Blur, Radiohead, The Boo Radleys and Shampoo performed.
  95. Rick Rubin
    Rick Rubin changed the name of his record label Def American Recordings to American Recordings because he felt that the word “Def” was overused in pop culture as a synonym for “cool” and had been exhausted after being added to the Webster's dictionary. He staged a symbolic funeral ceremony at the Hollywood Forever cemetery in Los Angeles, which included a eulogy by Reverend Al Sharpton and the burial of a coffin filled with records.
  96. Boyz II Men
    Vocal group Boyz II Men began a fourteen-week run at No. 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 with “I'll Make Love to You”. In the UK, the song reached No. 5. In December, it was replaced at the top by their own single “On Bended Knee”, which added another two weeks at No. 1, giving Boyz II Men a total of 16 consecutive weeks at the top of the US chart.

    Hootie & the Blowfish released their debut album “Cracked Rear View”, which later became one of the best-selling albums of the 1990s.

    American singer and songwriter DiFosco T. Ervin Jr., known as Big Dee Irwin, died in Las Vegas, Nevada, at the age of 63 from heart failure. He was best known for his version of “Swinging on a Star”, which he recorded with Little Eva.

    Blur played a secret concert at the Astoria Theatre in London to celebrate their victory over Oasis in the battle for the top spot on the British chart.

    Dwayne Goettel, keyboardist of Skinny Puppy, died at the age of 31.

    Pearl Jam released their fourth studio album “No Code” through Epic Records. The album debuted at No. 1 on the US album chart, but was not as commercially successful as their previous three albums and quickly fell down the chart.
