- The two-day Rock on the Tyne festival began in Gateshead, England. Performers included Ian Dury, Elvis Costello, U2, Rory Gallagher, Doll By Doll, Wang Chung, Becket, Dr Feelgood, The Gingers Nutters with Ginger Baker, Trimmer and Jenkins, and Lindisfarne.
