Billy Sherrill suggested during the session that she finish a song he had started working on, and they completed it together in just 15 minutes. The song became Wynette’s signature hit, reaching No. 1 on the
Billboard Country Songs chart and No. 19 on the
Billboard Hot 100 after its release on September 20, 1968, and selling more than two million copies.
