Description

Tammy Wynette announced that she had been kidnapped from a shopping center in Nashville, beaten, and held in her car for two hours by a man wearing a ski mask. According to her account, the kidnapper threatened her with a gun and forced her to drive approximately 80 miles from Nashville before releasing her. After her death, her daughter Jackie Daly claimed that Wynette had fabricated the kidnapping to cover up domestic violence by George Richey.

    During a recording session for her fifth album at CBS Studios in Nashville on August 28, 1968, Tammy Wynette recorded the song “Stand By Your Man”. Producer Billy Sherrill suggested during the session that she finish a song he had started working on, and they completed it together in just 15 minutes. The song became Wynette’s signature hit, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Country Songs chart and No. 19 on the Billboard Hot 100 after its release on September 20, 1968, and selling more than two million copies.
