  1. The Chainsmokers / Halsey
    The Chainsmokers featuring American singer Halsey reached No. 1 on the US singles chart with “Closer”. The song remained at the top for 12 weeks and reached No. 1 in more than ten countries. It subsequently became the first song to spend 26 weeks in the Billboard Hot 100 Top Five and only the second in chart history to spend 32 weeks in the Top 10.
  2. Queens of the Stone Age
    American rock band Queens of the Stone Age reached No. 1 on the UK album chart with their seventh studio album Villains.
  3. Taylor Swift
    Taylor Swift began a two-week run at No. 1 on the UK singles chart with “Look What You Made Me Do”.
  4. Cardi B / Nicki Minaj
    Tensions between Cardi B and Nicki Minaj came to a head at a party during New York Fashion Week, where the two got into a confrontation and Cardi threw a shoe at Nicki. A long-running feud followed, during which they repeatedly attacked each other in song lyrics and on social media.
  5. John Lennon
    The US Postal Service issued a commemorative stamp honoring John Lennon, featuring a photograph by Bob Gruen from the photo session for Lennon's 1974 album “Walls and Bridges”. The stamp was unveiled at a ceremony in New York's Central Park attended by Lennon's widow Yoko Ono and son Sean Lennon.
  6. Kathy Mattea
    Country singer Kathy Mattea ended a six-year recording hiatus with the release of the folk album “Pretty Bird”, which includes cover versions of “St. Teresa” by Joan Osborne, “Mercy Now” by Mary Gauthier and “Ode To Billie Joe” by Bobbie Gentry. The album also introduced a new vocal style for the singer, whose characteristically husky voice and vocal problems had led her to learn to use a lower register.
  7. Lenny Kravitz
    Lenny Kravitz released his eleventh studio album Raise Vibration, which features vocals by the late Michael Jackson on the single “Low”. Kravitz had also worked with Jackson on his song “(I Can't Make It) Another Day” from the posthumously released album Michael.
  8. Mac Miller
    American rapper, songwriter and producer Malcolm McCormick, known as Mac Miller, died at the age of 26 from a drug overdose.
  9. Lizzo
    Melissa Viviane Jefferson, known as Lizzo, reached No. 1 on the US singles chart with “Truth Hurts”, beginning a six-week run at the top. After appearing in the film “Someone Great”, where Gina Rodriguez sings the song after several drinks to cope with a breakup, the song reached No. 1 in the US almost two years after its initial release. Lizzo won a Grammy Award for Best Pop Solo Performance for the song.
  10. Taylor Swift
    Taylor Swift reached No. 1 on the US Billboard 200 with her seventh studio album Lover. The album also reached No. 1 in 19 other countries, including the UK, Canada and Australia.
  11. Lily Allen
    Lily Allen married David Harbour in the Graceland Wedding Chapel in Las Vegas. Harbour is known as Hopper from the series Stranger Things. The ceremony was conducted by an Elvis Presley impersonator.
  12. Freddie Mercury
    The Yamaha piano on which the late Freddie Mercury composed some of Queen's best-known hits was sold at auction for £1.7 million. Other items sold included a silver snake bracelet from the “Bohemian Rhapsody” video, handwritten lyrics to “Somebody To Love”, “Killer Queen” and “We Are the Champions”, and a Cartier onyx and diamond ring given to Mercury by Elton John.

    Linkin Park announced new singer Emily Armstrong, who would join the band for a new album and tour. The new lineup announcement preceded the release of the album “From Zero” and a new world tour.
  14. Mariah Carey
    Mariah Carey, a longtime MTV favorite who had never previously won a VMA, finally received the Video Vanguard Award. Video of the Year went to Ariana Grande for the 26-minute short film “Brighter Days Ahead”.
